How to educate the young

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

How to get the kids involved

Many of young children in early years do not understand climate change or do not know the effects it has on the planet. Schools also do not teach children from a young age on the impact from a young age on the impact climate change has on the planet.

The planet need the new generation to actually care about the planet and to do their part to keep the planet safe and to stop mass changes from happening, because at the moment the older generation are not caring and the generation now are trying their best to try and get the older and younger generation to understand the consequences we’ll have if we do not change now.

To get kids to understand the importance of climate change has on the world, it is important for teachers and parents to come up with ideas or activities for children to do and be able to learn about climate change and what effects it has on the world. This is because if only teachers do it, children would not be putting it as their focus and would think that it is only part of thee school curriculum. To start, teachers must consider

“When you are launching a new project clearly state your expectations from parents.”[1] (David, 2011).

So what teachers are expected to do are to inform parents of the project involving climate change to try and get parents involved in the task to try and get children to understand and learn about climate change and the effects it has on the world.

“If it is a walk to school or cycling project, give suggestions in your letter as to how parents can support their children.”[2] (David, 2011).

So, this is ways teachers can get parents attention, by pitching ideas. This means parents do not have to think of ideas of how to get their children involved in such a project to try and help the planet. These different ideas should be having reasons behind it to be told to the children. This means that the parent can have a talk about climate change with the child whilst on the walk to school or whilst cycling.

Children are quite hard to control and to keep their mind focused on a specific topic, because they are always wanting to discover something new or wanting to learn something new;

“Children naturally have a lot of energy – energy that can lead to concentration difficulties that hinder their ability to learn and retain information.”[3] (Enrichment, 2019).

However, when it comes to climate change, the topic is similar, therefore there is nothing different to keep the children entertained and focused on the topic. This means that activities should be created to try and keep them entertained. There are different tips and advice on the type of activities that can be done to keep a child entertained and focused on the topic of climate change.

“Memory games like matching cards are a popular concentration game for kids.”[4] (Enrichment, 2019).

This is a way to keep a child completely focused on a task. This activity relies on the children to have the ability to focus and memorise words, pictures or other objects. All focus would be on the game, as children are competitive, also it means memorising the cards/objects.

There are possible outcomes that we hope that could happen if teachers and parents follow the suggested activities or projects the school creates to be able to educate their children on the effect’s climate change has on the planet. The possible outcomes we would like to see is schools educating primary school children about climate change at least once a week.

If schools are to educate children on climate change from a young age, there are possibilities that children will take more interest on the planet and the effects climate change has on the world. Another possibility that we would also expect is parents to join and help the schools educate their own children on the affect’s climate change has on the world. If the parents are to help the schools in prioritising that climate change is a big issue in the world now, this means children will pay more attention like they would in language or maths lessons.
